An Online Home for Chicks Who Love The Flicks

I’ve been a movie fanatic a long time – more precisely, since E.T. flew over the heads of the nasty, scary NASA suits - and a TV nut since I fell in prepubescent love with both Dr. Johnny Fever of Cincinatti's WKRP and Hawkeye Pierce over in Korea. Note: All male-character dominated storylines. I didn’t start watching much of either TV or film until my hormones engaged. I was quite a young sexist; who cared about boy stories? I didn’t like princesses much (I preferred the dragons) and hated playing house (my neat freak husband can attest that this hasn’t changed much). Where were the women I wanted to be?

Well, they’re out there, but often hard to find. So, for that matter, are many great films and shows – brushed under the radar by Limited Releases or hiding away on Cable Channel 405.

This year's challenge: 365 Movies, 365 Days. Why not? It's a New Years Resolution I can enjoy - and it's inspired by the more than 300 films still waiting in my Netflix queue.

This means I'll be ignoring timelines, often pointing you to things released years ago. But hey, if you want to check out a reviewed movie, it won't cost you $15 to see.

Along the way, I’m going to be raising a lot of questions that I hope you can help me answer. What are chick flicks? Are they the only kinds of movies that bring out a female audience? Should we pay attention when Joe Schmo tells us to avoid the newest “insipid romance”? Who are the great women of cinema?

I don't have film degree. I don’t care much about Important Cinema. Wanna argue? Chime in any time. I bet we have a great time hashing it out!

So, let's get on with it, shall we?

What I'm Reading

Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips - Goofy, goofy What If? comic novel. Premise: What if the Greek gods never died and were living in London? Marketed as a chick-lit book, but over halfway through, I'm finding it's just funny - and would be to anyone who enjoyed mythology - especially as it contrasts a shy English office cleaner and knitting aficionado with some of the godliest gods ever imagined. Adult material, to be sure, as Aphrodite and Apollo's conquests are legion, but I would have loved it as a high schooler (smuggled in, of course). Thanks to Liese for leaving it here!
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams - I can't believe there was a Douglas Adams (of Hitchiker's Guide to Galaxy fame) novel left unturned in my youth...but here it is! Savoring it slowly.
Preston Sturges by Preston Sturges - autobiography, cobbled together from his writing posthumously by daughter Sandy, and so far, it's so full of Big Names of the 20th Century, I'm starting to believe Sturges himself was a movie character, instead of one of the screen's most brilliant writer/directors
