Okay, I just have to go on record here---as I have publicly elsewhere---to say that I would do just about anything to do Javier Bardem. But only if I had an entire week to do it. :)

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel is so incredible and intense and poetic, there is no way it could possibly translate to screen. I do love the casting of Bardem but Bratt as the doctor? Not at all how I pictured it either time I read it.

But I will add this, too, to la queue, per your review. Yikes. It's getting crowded over there on my Netflix line up.

I need to borrow that from you. So I love this movie but I'm seeing it through D&D goggles and Jack is obviously a 6th lvl ranger

I think the movie goes out of its way to contrast inocense and the taint of our own attributes. I think Curry did a beautiful job and had the best lines as he was bout to get sucked away. Saying how light cannot exist without darkness. Lily made me go goo goo back in the day.

BTW Lily had a vorpal bladed sword. Thats how she cut the chains

You're sooo right about the six year-olds! Holden loves, loves, loves this movie! It was his first real exposure to Star Wars except for some other cartoons. Personally, I fell asleep in the theater! =)

You should see when he tries to make his baby sister be Ventriss. =)

I like your observation about women and PTSD. I think Colleens thoughts were very compelling to think about but the two movies so reminded me of sitting through 1990's Avalon of where your seeing folks from an immigrant background struggle and make it...or not through times. Both are fairly boring but I can at least tell you lines from the Godfather...and that includes Godfather 3. From a guys perspective there is guns, great lines, exaggerated response to relationships and great death scenes...or in some cases a dead horse in your bed. Sure there are themes and metaplots galore but that is just good writting to justify the senseless violence your gonna be traumatized with. Unlike Avalon which probably had good writting but went nowhere, in the sense of context to keep your eyes open. So fearing death might be it but I may put it toward the male characters and not the male watchers.
I think on a more cerebral reason to watch the movies is to like watching a Shakespeare tragedy. The characters are doomed and you get to watch how they struggle against their fate. While you might surmise the end of it, because it is a tragedy after all, it is the journey that is most rewarding and how it is executed.

Your right there is a lot of boobies and a woman running nude because she is wearing the emperors stealth clothes. The visuals in the movie were pretty sweet when I first saw it but now the images seem to be pretentious and movie drawn out yawner. I hope this does not deter you from watching/reviewing anime like Akira and Spirited Away. Just avoid things with tentables and women...because that is just wrong.
So there are common themes in I found in anime, aside from naked women with boobies, such as the technological dehumanization, tech vs nature vs humanity, girls in school uniform, and kami(spirits in everything around).

I think that's a fantastic idea! Your people should talk to Branagh's people...seriously, I think he'd have a great touch for that light, quick comedy - if he can just limit how much pathos he tries to insert.
